WATCH: HISTORIANS SLAM SELMA AS DIRECTOR FIGHTS BACK Controversy has erupted over the historical accuracy of the critically acclaimed film Selma. The 2014 film, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt, tells the story of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches, a crucial moment in the Civil Rights Movement. There are some historians, however, who claim that Selma director Ava DuVernay misrepresented the historical role of President Lyndon B. Johnson. In the film, President LBJ is portrayed as reluctant to Civil Rights reform, contrary to documented phone conversations and witness testimony that LBJ historians believe illustrate his key influence in the movement. DuVernay fought back on Twitter saying, The notion that Selma was LBJs idea is draw dropping and offensive to SNCC, SCLC, and black citizens who made it so. Selma has garnered four Golden Globe Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director. Credit: Newsy
