WE CONTINUE TO HAVE AN AMAZING SUMMER! Sometimes it’s just hard to hide how much fun one can have at camp. I mean, look at some of the pictures we’ve posted on this facebook page from the past few days alone. Giant stuffed hamburgers, campfires, painting the afternoon’s lunch on our arms, taking a giant jump on our leap of faith up at the ropes course…we can’t hide it, camp is in full swing in session 3 and the fun hasn’t ceased one bit since the day our first session campers arrived more than a month ago. One aspect of camp that continues to amaze us year after year – and session after session for that matter – is how quickly and seamlessly our campers assimilate from their lives at home into camp life. Even for veteran campers, when one spends 10-11 months out of the year in one place, it’s easy to become extremely comfortable. Camp changes that, and the thought of being removed from one’s home, one’s bed, one’s friends, one’s family, one’s life for 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 weeks can be extremely daunting. Yet here we are just five days into our third session, and an outsider would probably think our campers have been here, together, for months. Take dinner two nights ago for example. In the middle of the meal, our Amirim Unit (campers entering 7th & 8th grade) rose, stood up on their chairs and let out an extremely loud unit cheer. Not to be outdone, our Atid campers (our oldest unit of campers entering 9th & 10th grade) rose and followed with a unit cheer of their own. From there, like clockwork, the Netzarim (5th & 6th grade) and Shorashim (2nd, 3rd & 4th grade) campers were standing up on their chairs and screaming at the top of their lungs. We’re guessing this isn’t too common at home, but it’s one aspect that makes camp truly a special place, and keeps the spirit alive throughout the summer. Yesterday our Atid Unit left for their 3rd Session trip to Zion National Park. While there, they’ll spend their time hiking, camping and swimming in waterfalls amongst other activities while enjoying one of the most scenic, picturesque places in the country. For those who read our Newsletters last session, you may recall that the Atid trips, which take place for our oldest unit during our 2nd and 3rd sessions, are special trips reserved for our oldest campers, considered by many to be the pinnacle of their camping career. Younger campers hear for years about these trips and many return year after year anxiously awaiting the year when they can finally go on their Atid trips. We can’t wait to see pictures and hear stories from their adventures. Back here at camp, we rounded up our first Shabbat weekend of the session with a drive-in movie up on the basketball court followed by a beautiful Havdalah service. And from there we are back at our regularly scheduled programming. The first week of the session is almost over, with a new round of Chugim (elective activity periods) coming our campers’ way shortly. In the meantime, more ropes will be climbed, arrows shot, plays acted out, dances danced, pots glazed and much much more! All is well up the tall green mountain here at CMC. The days are flying by…a clear sign that we’re having a good time!
