WE NEED YOUR HELP! The Mat-Su Borough is seeking information on the attempted theft of the Fee Collection Pipe at the Jim Creek Recreation Area. The Fee Pipe was taken either Sunday or Monday, July 6-7. It was connected to a 500-800lb concrete filled drum and pulled from the hole, dragging it roughly a mile down a trail past several homes. It was then abandoned and subsequently recovered by the Mat-Su Borough. The cost to put it back is significant and ends up hurting the honest people who use the area. The individuals who did this obviously created a great deal of noise and it is our hope that someone can provide information which will ultimately help prevent crimes like this in the future. The Mat-Su Borough invests a significant amount of money into the Jim Creek Recreation Area. One example is the $60,000 which paid for the restroom facility already there and another $250,000 added in the FY15 budget for further improvements. Destroying Borough infrastructure makes it more difficult to make the argument for future funding where other worthy projects are competing for the same dollars. When the residents choose to take ownership of their playground, criminals will find it harder to get away with this kind of destructive behavior and be held accountable.
