WEATHER WARNING Police Scotland remind drivers that we are still in the grip of a severe spell of weather which has given us floods, snow, sleet and ice across many roads in Dumfries and Galloway over the past few days. This spell is set to continue and a Yellow ‘Be Aware’ Warning remains in place for snow, ice and wintry showers which will affect the region through until 1100 hours on Friday 12 December 2014. Inspector Neil Hewitson, of the Roads Policing Unit said ”over the past 24 hours police in the region have dealt with a dozen or so crashes, from the A714 in the west, through to the A76, the A74(M) and the A7 in the east. Thankfully only a few minor injuries have been sustained in a few of these crashes, however drivers are again being reminded to drive to the conditions they are experiencing. The crashes have ranged from vehicles skidding off the road in icy conditions or snowbound or slushy road surfaces, through to collisions between vehicles in falling snow and poor visibility. Drivers need to carefully consider the necessity of their journey, and prepare fully for it. Check your route and the weather forecast carefully. Just because the sun is shining in Dumfries or Stranraer as you set off for Glasgow doesn’t mean that it will be shining all the way up the road. Use the transportscotland.gov.uk site to check your route, or give them a call on 0141 2727 100. Make sure you are prepared with a winter weather kit, including warm clothes, boots, food and drink, de-icer and a scraper. Also, never assume that a road has been salted, and even if it has been treated, never assume that it is safe. Drive carefully and keep yourself and other road users safe this winter.
