WEBM showing off my personal favorite firearm, the an-94. Introduced just after the collapse and failing to acquire any contracts, it languished in obscurity until tacticool video games used it. Basically, research was done on the nature of recoil and how it impacts accuracy and the soviets found that a triple burst is actually less accurate since by the time you get to the third shot, the impact of the first shot starts to merge with that of the second causing dispersion. So they looked at a 2-round burst system and found it worked, but having one less shot per burst hurt the total RPM. The solution was pretty simple, have the two rounds be part of the same shot, so the barrel is mobile and the recoil forces it back, loads the second round, and fires, so that way each trigger pull is able to accurately fire two rounds into the same location. This is extremely fast and allows you to get an extremely accurate and rapid firearm. Its also reliable, much more than youd think, since its still a simple ak design at heart. However, manufacturing wise its expensive and for many potential buyers, the idea of buying from Russia wasnt too good, because of control issues and politics. Its easier to go to a NATO-aligned power and get 5 billion m16s or to china and get 10 billion akms than it is to buy a current gen anything from russia. The design was influential, since despite its late introduction, the research on movable barrels was used to great effect on higher caliber sniper rifles used both sides of the Curtain. And in this modern world with improving armor, the setup allows you to break through armor a lot easier. In short, its an important step in weapon design that may or may not have a future but its a smexy gun that Ill never get to acquire as a collector.
