WEDNESDAY 14 JANUARY 2015 ‘ 1.32PM LAGOS NIGERIA TIME At 1.32pm Lagos Nigeria time, I opened my red entrance door and stepped out to my balcony my silver-ring gold-pad lock in my hand wearing my black flat curved-toes shoes, my blue skinny jeans trousers, my light blue and white horizontal lines round neck loose t-shirt, my black curly wig weave-on held behind my head with my plain colour clipper with tiny coloured flower prints, my cream rose studs with one stone dangling under each. I carried my black handbag with flowery leather designs on one side over a cream background (handbag) and wore my black QMAGA Quartz 622 wrist watch with silver hook. ‘ TO PAY MY RENT ‘ I closed my red entrance door, slid my silver-ring gold-pad lock in its hole on my red entrance door and looked in my handbag to make sure I had my black unicco purse in it. Then I locked my silver-ring gold-pad lock. Then I climbed down my one flight stairs, turned left and walked in front of my one-storey building to the black entrance gate of my residence, 1, Bayo Akhimien Crescent, Ijegun Lagos Nigeria. Using the small side gate, I stepped on to Pipeline road. I turned left and walked to my first turning on the left which leads to Bayo Akhimien Crescent. I walked into Bayo Akhimien Crescent hoping to see a street sign with the name of the road. Realizing there was only a street sign at the other end of the road which states Bayo Akhimien Street, I turned back and walked to Pipeline road. I crossed Pipeline road to the street directly opposite Bayo Akhimien Crescent and walked down. I looked at the street sign and saw Hassan Yaya Street. The shop directly facing Hassan Yaya Street is the shop of Aron Tunde Enterprises, my landlord’s agent. ‘’ When I got to the shop, I saw my landlord’s agent and two men sitting outside the shop. I said in Yoruba “good afternoon, happy new year” smiling. My landlords’ agent responded. Then I turned to the other two men and said “happy new year” smiling. One of them said “where is my year’s present”? I smiled. Then turning to my landlord’s agent, I said I wanted to see him about my rent. He said ok. I said “may I see you?” I stepped into the shop and took a seat. He came in and took a seat opposite me. I asked him if the name of my street was Bayo Akhimien Crescent or Bayo Akhimien Street. He said “Bayo Akhimien Crescent”. I said “street or crescent? Because Victor told me it is Bayo Akhumien Crescent”. He said “it is Crescent”. I said ok. I told him my rent is due tomorrow and I did not know if it was going to be a year’s rent he would take or not. He said it was a year’s rent. I said I did not know if I would be another year in the property. In fact I had been thinking of asking him to get me another property in the area. He asked me what type of property I would like because it costs about #100,000.00. I said this one is #70000.00 although I was initially told it cost #60,000.00. He said it costs #80,000.00 to #100,000.00 to rent a one-room flat. I asked him if he had increased the rent. He said no. The #80000.00 to #100,000.00 is for flats. I said I would like something like this one I live in. I like this property too but because he promised to fix the door area and it had not been done. Rats and other pests creep in; even the bathroom needs to be repaired. He said he knew about it. ‘ He said I should pay for the year and he would carry out repairs. Smiling, I asked if he used my rent for repairs then too. He said he used my rent to do repairs. I reminded him he told me he would get aluminium sheets to shield my window from rain but it has not been done. He said he used my rent to do the roofs. I said I would like to pay for 3 months since I am not sure I would be in the property for the whole year. He said the three months rent was too small and that I should pay for 6 months instead. I said what if I wanted to leave the property earlier. He said I should give him notice. I said “say I want to leave tomorrow, I could just come and notify you tomorrow”. He said I should tell him 2 weeks before that. I said “that is what I mean”. I said I would like to pay for three months for now. He said ok. I brought out #18,000.00 from my hand bag and counted it before him. I told him “it is #17,500.00 for 3 months” and gave him #18,000.00 in 18 #1000.00 notes. He took it. He said I could still move into the top apartment he told me about before, that one is better in his opinion. He told me an Ibo man was moving out of an apartment in the first building on the left side of the premises. I said he told me and Ibo man was moving out; I have been living there for a year already and the man has not moved out. He said the man would be leaving this January. I said ok. Then I asked him for a receipt. He told me Victor would be giving me a receipt. I said Aron Tunde Investments gave me a receipt when I moved in. He said that was the for the first payment. I said “what is Victor?” He said “Victor is the landlord. He will give you a receipt and #500 change when I give him the money”. He said Victor just left his place too. Facing his daughter, he said “didn’t Victor just leave?” The lady said yes. ‘ I said “You’re not going to give me a receipt then”. He said Victor would do that. I said ok, “thank you sir” and got up. He said ok, and I left. I walked out of the shop to the road. Then I walked through Hassan Yaya Street. At the end of Hassan Yaya street, I turned left into Pipeline road. Then I crossed to the other side and walked to the black gate of my residence, 1, Bayo Akhimien Crescent, Ijegun Lagos Nigeria. This is the only gate one sees as one turns from Hassan Yaya street into Pipeline road on the other side of the road, before he gets to the next street (Ayanlaja street); this black gate is the only entrance and exit gate to 1, Bayo Akhimien Crescent, Ijegun Lagos Nigeria. ‘ I walked through the small side black gate of 1, Bayo Akhimien Crescent, Ijegun Lagos Nigeria. Then I turned left and walked to Victor’s building. I stood outside his top flat and called out “Victor”, a few times. The door to his balcony was closed. So I opened the double doors leading to his stair case and climbed through two flight stairs to the first floor. When I got to the second flight stairs, I looked up and saw Victor’s door locked with a padlock. Therefore, I turned and climbed back down the stairs. I stopped out to the premises and closed the double doors. I walked straight to my one-storey building, past the black entrance gate of 1, Bayo Akhimien Crescent, Ijegun Lagos Nigeria. I walked in front of my one-storey building, which is the first building on the right on the premises; my apartment is the only one on the top floor. ‘ I walked to my one flight stairs on the other side of the one-storey building. I climbed my one flight stairs to the red entrance door of my apartment. As I climbed up my stairs, I took out my black unicco purse from my black handbag with flowery leather designs on one side over a cream background. I brought out my silver keys from my black unicco purse and returned my black unicco purse to my black handbag with flowery leather design on one side over a cream background. When I got to my red entrance door, standing on my balcony, I opened the silver-ring gold-pad lock of my red entrance door using one of my silver keys. I removed my silver-ring gold-pad lock from its hole on my red door entrance, opened my red entrance door, went in and locked my red entrance door. I got back home at 1.49pm Lagos Nigeria time. ‘ 5.45PM LAGOS NIGERIA TIME ‘ At 5.45pm Lagos Nigeria time, I heard a knock on my door and said “who is it”. The caller said “It’s me Victor”. I took my silver keys and went to the door. I opened my door and said “good afternoon”, wearing my light blue slippers with black white-dotted straps and a flower in the centre of each strap, my blue skinny jeans trousers, my light blue and white horizontal lines round neck loose t-shirt, my black curly wig weave-on held behind my head with my plain colour clipper with tiny coloured flower prints, my cream rose studs with one stone dangling under each. Victor stood at my red entrance door in a white t-shirt over which he wore a red open front hooded top. ‘ He said “Baba” (that is, the agent) told him to give me a #500 change, handing me #500. I took it. Then he said “Baba” also told him to give me a receipt and that I should write my name down on a paper for him. I left him at the door and returned to my living room to get my original Green Hard cover Nigerian passport Number A04291241 on which is printed in Gold the Nigerian symbol, the African Map highlighting the West African region, Economic Community of West African States CEDERO ECOWAS Federal Republic of Nigeria International Passport. Opening the bio-data page of my original Green Hard cover Nigerian passport Number A04291241 on which is printed in Gold the Nigerian symbol, the African Map highlighting the West African region, Economic Community of West African States CEDERO ECOWAS Federal Republic of Nigeria International Passport and showing him, I said “Miss Olabisi Olubukola Olojo”. He said “Olabisi Olojo”. I said “Miss Olabisi Olubukola Olojo. MISS”. He said “Miss Olabisi Olubukola Olojo. I hope I can remember that”. I said “yeah” and he left. I locked my rent entrance door. It was 5.46pm Lagos Nigeria time. ‘ MY RECEIPT ‘ Shortly after, I heard a knock on my door and went to my passage. I stood by the side space of my door and saw Victor. He handed me a paper which stated RENT RECEIPT. I took it and read through it. I saw the dat 14-01-2015, My name Miss OLABISI OLUBUKOLA OLOJO. The Sum of SEVENTEEN THOUSAND AND FIVE HUNDRED Naira being Rent due for the month (s) of Jan – March 2015 At 1 BAYO AKHIMIE CR, IJEGUN RD IKOTUN. He wrote #17,500 and signed. At the top, it stated No:…. I asked him why he did not fill out the number. He said that was just for administrative purpose, it was the number of the receipt. Then I said “IJEGUN ROAD, IKOTUN”. He said that is Ijegun road and that this is part of Ikotun. I said ok. Then he said NEPA had brought the bill. I said “For December”. He said yes but he had not allocated how much each person should pay. He said the bill is a lot, among 5 households. I said he told me he shared the bill among 11 households. ‘ He said some apartments have there bill separately….. I said let me know what my own quota is. He said ok and left. ‘ I remained indoors the rest of day. I did not step out again.
