WEDNESDAY NIGHT STORMS: Tonight and tomorrow an - TopicsExpress

WEDNESDAY NIGHT STORMS: Tonight and tomorrow an area/cluster/line of thunderstorms continues moving east into the Ohio Valley. By tomorrow evening, this line will be moving into our area. Right now, there is some question to timing and strength... Timing of these thunderstorms may be as early as after 8pm tomorrow evening or as late as 1 or 2 AM-this will be narrowed down more tomorrow, as these storms are tough to predict more than 12 hours out. Because this line of storms is moving through at night here, theres a possibility they lose strength once they hit the mountains or break up-but this isnt a guarantee. The main severe weather threat with storms like these are damaging straight-line winds. Gusts to 70mph are possible just ahead of the line itself, if the storms keep their strength and hold together. Hail is also possible and tornadoes are unlikely for us. Is this storm a Derecho? Maybe. A derecho is like a hurricane-in that, its named such once it has certain criteria. A line/cluster of thunderstorms that is fast-moving is called a derecho once severe wind(58mph+) lasts in a path for more than 240 miles & has wind gusts of 75+mph with in the line. So, until it reaches that level, we refer to it as a squall line, cluster of thunderstorms, etc. Even if this squall line isnt considered a derecho, it may still be severe and fast-moving when it gets here... which would bring intense wind gusts that can bring down tree branches and power lines. For now, prepare for severe weather tomorrow night. Make sure you have a flashlight, batteries for possible power loss, make sure you have a way to receive severe weather warnings. We will keep you posted on any forecast changes.
