WEEK 7 IN THE 209: ANXIOUS FOR OFFENSE? GUARANTEED TO BE ENTERTAINED ANY TIME YOURE WATCHING MERCED Week 7, October 16-18 (Here are a handful of ways to spend a fun Friday night in The 209) Pitman-Turlock at Merced (Golden Valley), 7:30 – How are you going to beat Merced this year? By keeping QB Tyrone Williams and the prolific no-huddle offense off the field – which is what Pitman’s deceptive Wing-T is intended do. There’s a new fleet of RBs and a new QB for the Pride – but all those parts should be meshing by the second half of the season. This is a good shot for the Bears to show their defense matches their offense. Got some fun tape of Merced RB/DB Jabar Byrd! https://youtube/watch?v=_ABcedlyCJ8 Buhach Colony at Turlock, 7:30 – It’s been a topsy-turvy time for Turlock’s program since Pitman High began playing varsity ball I 2003. With no clear No. 2 behind CCC favorite Merced, each of the five other teams think they’ll be the ones finishing 1 or 2. The loser here is looking at third pace, under the best scenario. Enochs-Modesto at Downey-Modesto, 7:30 – QB Shawn Munoz was Black Hat’s Sophomore of the Year after leading Enochs to the playoffs in 2012 with an open offense that included deep tosses and opportunities for Munoz to run outside the tackles. The offense shifted between the tackles last fall and it proved to be disastrous – Munoz and his RBs will get back to running toward the sideline and cutting upfield this season, forcing the Knights to spread the defense thin on a fast artificial carpet. We told you about some of the great catches Downey WR Josh Lowe made during this 7x7 season. Reminded us to bring out this clip he had from last year – maybe Catch of the Year. https://youtube/watch?v=cWtsHPIFKIM Edison-Stockton at Chavez-Stockton, 7:15 – We’re going to have Stagg as our San Joaqun Athletic Association favorite, but dont tell that to the Delta Kings’ Stockton rivals. Ground-and-pound Edison vs. quick-strike Chavez makes for interesting contrast – and it’s also a good night when you get to see Chavez RB Priest Jennings (791 yards, 7 TDs). Le Grand at Waterford, 7:30 – With Ripon Christian having lost record-setting RB Andrew Brown and cutting-edge coach Randy Fasani, the door could be open for Waterford to step into the top echelon of the Southern League. RBs Ryan Cherry (686 yards, 5 TDs) and Dante Berggren (10.2-yard avg., 4 TDs) will need to have big games here for Waterford to spring the upset. Hilmar at Escalon, 7:30 – The best small-school rivalry in The 209, in large part because they’re perennial Trans-Valley League contenders. If not for parochial power Central Catholic-Modesto, these would have been the last two section champions. Escalon coach Mark Loureiro has had a year to gameplan for Hilmar QB Jonathan O’Brien following last year’s 28-14 loss in Hilmar. Tokay-Lodi at St. Mary’s-Stockton, 7:30 – Coach Louis Franklin rebuilt the program and took Tokay to the playoffs the last tw years, but relalignment has dropped the Tigers into the Tri-City Athletic League with St. Mary’s, Lincoln and Tracy. Tokay will be coming off a game vs. Tracy and Lincoln awaits – its most challenging three-week stretch in years. Oakdale at Sierra 7 – This game has become a fall standard since Sierra stunned the Mustangs at The Corral in 2009 (Sierra’s first and only win over Oakdale) when Patrick Hall kicked field goals of 40, 45 and 50 yards in a 44-42 win. There’s not an Oakdale fan that doesn’t think of those kicks every time they sit down to watch these two. The key for Oakdale is ball control and keeping Sierra’s offense on the sideline. Oakdale is 4-0 vs. Sierra that that loss, outscoring the T’wolves 151-53. Los Banos at Patterson, 7 – With Central Catholic out of the Western Athletic Conference and Central Valley coach Jason McCloskey at newly minted Mountain House High, the balance of power shifts to the West Side. Playing on the turf will be an advantage for Patterson. LB RB David Walker was slowed by an ankle injury last fall, and the junior’s health is critical for LB.
