WELCOME INCREASE IN WOMEN’S SUPPORT FOR YES July 13, 2014 A new ICM poll published in Scotland on Sunday today (13 July) shows more women than men look set to vote yes in September’s referendum. (44% women yes compared to 43% men). Support for a Yes vote amongst women has increased by 8% to 44% in the past 2 months. The referendum ‘gender gap’ has been a persistent feature of the campaign until now, an issue Women for Independence is determined to address. With over 40 groups throughout Scotland, and dozens of meetings being held every week, the grass roots campaign are convinced that more and more women are moving from No and Undecided to Yes. A spokesperson for Women for Independence said: “ When talking with women throughout communities in Scotland, we believe that our positive message about the possibilities a Yes Vote can bring are resonating. We know that women have been most affected by Westminster’s cuts, and are concerned about the future of the welfare state and NHS in Scotland as they see the privatisation of the NHS South of the border. More and more women are realizing that only independence guarantees a fairer and more prosperous future for them and their families.” Many women are also enthusiastic about the possibilities that a written constitution can make to the cause of equal pay and greater gender equality. Women for Independence is determined to ensure that women’s voices are to the forefront after the 18th September as well as in the remaining 9 weeks of campaigning.
