WELCOME to a week about knowledge and collaboration for long-term sustainable landscapes 2-6 September 2013, in Skinnskatteberg and Bergslagen, south-central Sweden How we use land is very important for several businesses such as agriculture, forestry, tourism and energy production. Additionally, land use is a major issue for green and technical infrastructures, regional development, cultural heritage and landscape, outdoor activities and recreation. To develop long-term sustainable land use there is a need to consider different interests and demands, as well as to balance different societal aims. This requires collaboration among actors and stakeholders, and a holistic perspective on sustainability that is captured by the term “landscape approach”. Examples of landscape approach concepts include Biosphere Reserve, Model Forest and EU Leader. The network Sustainable Bergslagen is an initiative aiming at a landscape approach. TRAVELLING WORKSHOP (2-3/9): Practical examples of landscape approach work in Bergslagen. We travel in Bergslagen by bus, with start and finish in Skinnskatteberg. We learn about work towards sustainability in rural development, forest management, mining, municipal planning, conservation and water management. Hosts for the different study visits are partners of the network Sustainable Bergslagen. INAUGURATION (4/9): The governor of Västmanland inaugurates the network Sustainable Bergslagen as a member of the international networks for “Model Forest” and “Long-Term Socio-Economic and Ecosystem Reserarch (LTSER)”. Sustainable Bergslagen partners present their work. Hosts are the network Sustainable Bergslagen with its partners, and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Place: the Culture House Korpen/Kulturhuset Korpen, Skinnskatteberg. APPLIED INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH CONFERENCE (5-6/9): Knowledge production and learning for sustainable landscapes, and a workshop to develop international collaboration among places in Europe’s East and West. Host is the research network Forest-Landscape-Society at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Skinnskatteberg. Place: the Culture House Korpen/Kulturhuset Korpen, Skinnskatteberg. BERGSLAGEN is an informal region in south-central Sweden with an ancient history of use of natural resources as a means of developing human welfare and quality of life. Minerals, wood and streams in Bergslagen were for very long the base for economic wealth for the entire Sweden. New ideas about how to make use of the natural resources in Bergslagen were often introduced by immigrants. Another consequence of the long history of industrial production became low levels of entrepreneurship and education, as well as need for landscape restoration in Bergslagen. The NETWORK SUSTAINABLE BERGSLAGEN works with a landscape approach, and is connected to two international networks, Model Forest and LTSER. The network develops collaboration among different actors in Bergslagen with the aim of sustainable landscapes and long-term sustainable land use. An important part is to monitor, analyse and compare the sustainability status of landscapes with societal goals. Together we develop new knowledge and perform activities towards the common goal, a sustainable Bergslagen region. The FORESTY-LANDSCAPE-SOCIETY research group at SLU-Skinnskatteberg works since 2004 with applied research about landscape and sustainability with the aim to make their research useful in Bergslagen and similar rural areas in Europe’s East and West. This is done through an applied interdisciplinary approach based on use of natural and human sciences, and collaboration with stakeholders in the landscape. The research group was designated as a strong research environment in 2011. COSTS FOR PARTICIPATION AND REGISTRATION Full-board accommodation (two persons per room per day): 1500 SEK, without accommodation 750 SEK, only accommodation 750 SEK (VAT included in all prices).
