WEST CARROLLTON — Police are investigating what happened at an apartment complex this afternoon after they were dispatched on a report of a near drowning involving a 3-year-old girl. The child has been moved to Dayton Children’s Hospital after a rescue unit initially took her to Sycamore Medical Center from the Villa South Gardens apartments, in the 1600 block of Villa South Drive. West Carrollton police Deputy Chief Doug Woodard said the child will continue to be monitored closely as investigators continue trying to determine how she ended up in the gated outdoor pool and whether the child and her family are residents of the complex. A rescue unit was dispatched at about 2:30 p.m. on the report that the child had been in the water for a time. Dan Baumaster tells us he saw the child’s mother in the pool area, trying to perform CPR on her daughter, noting, “I followed the father in to help resuscitate the child.” Baumaster, a father of two children, said he held the child as her parents alternately worked to continue the CPR. “Her lips were blue… I didn’t have much hope,” Baumaster said, again noting that he carried the child to the medic vehicle as soon as it arrived. “It’s a tough situation,” he said. According to Woodard, the pool will remain closed during the investigation, which could take up to three hours.
