WESTERN WYO AVALANCHE ADIVSORY Issued on Fri 9 Jan 2015 @ 5:13 PM SITUATION In the Jackson Hole valley early fog raised but the low clouds again stayed in place throughout the day. The ceiling for these clouds was approximately 7500-8000 feet. Above that and in our other areas skies were clear this morning with increasing high thin clouds throughout the day. Temperature in the eight to nine thousand feet levels rose into the low thirties while summits and valleys reached the mid twenties. West winds were again relatively calm on the summits, with averages between five and fifteen miles per hour. Even with warm temperatures, snowpack settlement has slowed to zero to one inch per day throughout the region. Snow surfaces consist of abundant surface hoar and settled powder with areas of sun crusts on south facing slopes and wind pack on exposed high terrain. FORECAST FOR 10 Jan 2015 Westerly flow is to slowly re-establish itself on Saturday although this transition will be slow as not much wind or moisture is associated with this change. On Saturday increasing clouds will bring a chance for periods of light snow while temperatures rise into the mid twenties and west winds have averages between five and fifteen miles per hour. Accumulations are to be very light. The general avalanche hazard will remain Moderate above 7500 feet where dense to hard slabs could be triggered in steep terrain with depths to three feet. These slabs are most likely to be found in cliff or rocky areas. Avalanches below 7500 feet are unlikelytomorrow. TREND FOR Sun 11 Jan 2015 & Mon 12 Jan 2015 More widespread snowfall is expected Sunday into Monday. At this point accumulations for this period are only to be between four and eight inches with moderate winds therefore the avalanche hazard is not expected to change significantly.
