WFHG’s George west Show host George west has been on a rant for a week or more about a handout that may or may not have been given out to an elementary group of students in Carter County, Tennessee. I have reviewed the depiction of the Mount Rushmore Presidents and the blurb beneath each president. As a student of United States history, I work each day to uncover the truths that have been “left out” of our history books for the sake of possibly “offending” someone. I believe this current rave is unfounded and is being brought about by those people who are not well informed about the history of the United States and those pseudo historians who delight in perpetuating a controversy for the sake of ratings. Here is my open letter to Mr. West. • Mr. West, will you please tell me what part of the “handout” about the presidents on Mount Rushmore is NOT true. I have a master’s degree in United States history and I believe these statements reflect the beliefs of these presidents. Are the complaints about the content or the origin? If it is about the content there is no basis to dispute what is written. I firmly believe we should teach the truth in history not the sanitized versions.
