WHAT DID CHRIST DO? The following illustration will help in explaining this: An innocent fellow who did not know swimming slipped and fell into a river overflowing both its banks. He struggled for his life in the surging waters that dragged him down. A small crowd soon collected on the bank. “How foolish of a man knowing no swimming to come to river! Even then, can’t he keep off at a safe distance?” That was from an elderly person in the crowd. “Brother! Just keep your head above the water! Hold your breath and cling on to that log floating in the stream!” This was another person who had been advising people all his life. Then mumbled a man from the crowd: “Whom would fate spare? It is already preordained that he should have a watery grave!” “Oh, what a pity! Whose child could he be? How his mother’s heart would wail!” This was from a mother. While all these persons were addressing the poor struggling stranger in choice words and measured phrases, none lifted his little finger to rescue him from the fierce waters. Just then, there appeared on the scene a fisherman who knew swimming. He cast a compassionate look at the dying man. He neither spoke a single word nor pondered over the situation even for a minute. He plunged into the waters. In a moment, he had neared the sinking man and caught him by his hair. The flood began dragging them both together. The earlier commentators resumed their harangue on the shore. Now they were all sympathetic for the rescuer: “Hasty fool! Couldn’t he think a bit before leaping in like this?” But that fisherman had no ear for all these remarks. Using every ounce of his energy, he swam and reached ashore dragging with him the man he had saved. Jesus Christ also did the same. He gave Himself for our sins. He leaped into the sea of sorrows, experienced all sufferings, tasted death on the cross and saved all mankind. “For the Son of man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).
