WHAT DOES "GOLD FILLED" MEAN..... All jewellery is made up of a rod of gold. With 9ct gold, for example the rod is made up of solid gold. With gold filled jeweller, only the outside layer, which is the gold that you can touch and see, is real gold ... the inner of the rod is made up of other metals such as brass for example. Hence, you are not paying for gold that you cannot see or touch. The same thing applies for gold plated, but with gold plated the layer of real gold on the outside is extremely thin, hence with rubbing, chemicals, sweat, perfumes etc the gold wears down easily and the inner metals can be seen. In gold filled jewellery the outer layer of gold is sometimes 50 times thicker than with gold plated, so it wears well and for much longer. A lot of people will complain that they get a green mark from wearing gold plated jewellery and this is because the thin layer of gold has worn down and the brass is reacting to their skin. All gold wears down.... even 9ct, 14ct etc.... It all depends on the quality of gold. Basically you get what you pay for... If you are like me, and like a few different jewellery pieces, then gold filled jewellery is a great alternative as it is very affordable…. I would not say, and I do tell people, that I don’t think gold filled jewellery is suitable to wear all day, every day…. but in saying that I know people who do and they get a year or so out of their jewellery until it starts to wear down. The pieces are very strong, just like normal gold or silver jewellery pieces and can last years with regular cleaning and care.
