WHAT DOES REDEMPTION MEAN: What does redemption mean? What does redemption require? When the Bible talks about redemption , it has something to do with payment; payment to whom? What kind of payment and at what costs? We will try to answer all questions one by one, in the meantime, lets start with the meaning of redemption, shall we? The Greek word for redemption is agorazo meaning to buy from a marketplace. In ancient times, it was referred to the act of buying slaves. In Christianity, it refers to Jesus redeeming power to buy up people from the slavery of sin through his own act of sacrifice. Redemption denotes the exchange of negotiable instruments; you have to give something in exchange for something . It is very similar to ransom; however, the difference is redemption is the process of buying up while ransom is the redemption price itself. While we were yet prisoners of sin, there is no way we can be set free until the ransom is paid. We have to keep in mind that at this period, everything that Jesus did has to have a redemptive value however small and seemingly insignificant. Truly no man can ransom another, or give God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice.....(Psalm 49:7-8, esv). There has to be a price to be paid and that price is priceless. No man can redeem the life of another that he should live on forever. The verse does indicate to whom we owe this debt and its not to some rich fellow, not satan but God himself. It is God whom we owe this great debt. We do not owe satan anything at all and never think for one second that he has to be satisfied in order for him to relent. God did not allow Jesus to die on the cross to appease the devil, no never! The offense is against God and his commandments ; therefore , it is God who demands payment for violation of His laws.
