WHAT HAPPENED ! This post is taken from a Chapter in the Book I am working on, A LIFE OF LAUGHTER, JOY AND LOVE, when lived to the full, what a beautiful life. I want to share with you an incident I had with John Bad Dog Mc Cormack, and the Memphis morning radio program, THE WAKE UP CREW, many years ago. My beloved Wife, Jacinta, was the Receptionist and Telephone Operator and I was the Artist for The Sacred Heart Southern MIssions fund raising office. The phone rang, Jacinta answered, Good Morning, Sacred Heart Southern Missions. Good morning, this is Tim Spenser of the the Morning Wake Up Crew on WREC Radio. Is Mr Di Cresce there, or is he up in the prayer tower? I would like to talk to him. Yes he is... Peter, Peter, come on down from the Prayer Tower. She called me and said Mr. Tim Spenser from WREC radio station is on the line and wants to talk to you. The conversation went like this... Mr. Di Cresce, I would like to clear up a little matter so there would not be any misunderstanding in your family, in case you were wondering why Joy Christie didnt sleep in the University dormitory last night. It was because she slept over night in her girl friends home last night. Thank you. Mr. Di Cresce, could I please ask you a personal question ? Yes. Joy Christie said you seldom listen to our radio program and you did yesterday not liking it. Yes. May I ask why ? Well, I happened to listen to it yesterday when you were commenting about Robert Young, the Movie Stars attempted suicide that failed, and I did not appreciate the humor. Yall regrettably crossed the line. Further more Yall have the most popular radio program in the Mid South with a big following. Today there are few Heroes. You have the opportunity to be a big influence with the Children. Instead of raunchy humor and jokes, you could increase your listening audience so Grandmothers and Children could also enjoy listening. Being asked a number of questions, I was answering with a series of simple Yes or No. then Bad Dog quipped, Boy, he talks in Short Hand, doesnt he. Then I continued... When I grew up in the Great Depression, Will Rogers was the likeable, home spun Cowboy who became the top movie Star with Shirley Temple. In those days. He was the Good Will Ambassador for the United States to the Nations. Wills favorite line was, I never met a man I didnt like. He was the one man who lifted up the entire nation when it was down and out because of the terrible, Great Depression. Everyone loved him, Will was genuine and down to earth. He wrote a daily political newspaper column, always respectful and kind, using gentle humor. One time he wrote, Man, have we ever a big problem in Washington DC. But I have the perfect solution for those fellows there. What we need to do is to give all of them two vacations a year. Six months each n we would save a lot of money. Continuing I said... Now I challenge you, instead of raunchy jokes and shady humor, why not use good, clean humor ? and you will have a bigger following. At that point, John Powell and Fred Cook who were the famous radio personalities for many years in Memphis with there Zero Hour program and were now in their Sun Set years, but were still on the radio, they stuck their heads in the door way and called out, Heh Mr. Di Cresce, give it to them, give it to them ! Smiling, Bad Dog, the Comedian bellowed out, But Mr. Di Cresce, they drink ! Now I never mentioned God or Religion the whole time. After we parted, I turned the radio on while doing my art work and and listened as they continued... Tim was going through his notes, No, I cant use that, Mr . Di Cresce wouldnt like that, No,we cant use that joke... Nope. Di Cresce wouldnt approve of this one. Then Bev Hart exclaimed, Wow! God has just visited this Radio Station. The amazing thing was that they never had given so much time to any one before. For a couple of weeks they they kept talking about what had happened on that day. After all is said and done, All is well, that ends well.
