WHAT IS A BLIZZARD? The qualify as a blizzard, you need two specific criteria: high winds, and low visibility. Believe it or not, the amount of snow doesnt matter. Criteria: - 35+ MPH WINDS - 1/4 VISIBILITY OR LESS (Due to falling or blowing snow) All of that for three straight hours. Thats really hard to do unless youre in a really strong storm. Boston is undergoing a full blizzard right now, but New York City didnt see one. Here in the Triad, weve never officially recorded blizzard conditions. Weve come close a few times, the closest being the 1993 Storm of the Century that went up the East Coast. We had visibility of 1/4 mi, but only winds of 20-25 mph.
