WHAT IS AN INTRAVENOUS PYELOGRAM (#IVP)? An #intravenous #pyelogram is an x-ray examination of the #urinary tract, demonstrating the function of the urinary system and to rule out any pathology of the kidneys, ureters and bladder. A normal study takes less than an hour. On occasion delayed x-rays may be required thus lengthening the time of the examination. To visualize these soft tissue structures, a substance called a contrast medium will be used. This is sometimes referred to as an X-ray dye. The technologist performing the examination will ask you if you have any known allergies to any medications in order to notify the radiologist prior to the examination. PREPARATION FOR IVP It is essential for the bowel to be empty and clean. The Medical Imaging staff will give you complete instructions about the preparation, which includes a liquid diet the day before the examination. A laxative solution and tablets will be supplied to clear the colon. Any prescribed medication may be taken prior to the examination. Any woman who thinks she may be pregnant should inform her doctor before scheduling this examination.
