WHAT IS CROSSFIT? The definition of CrossFit is, “Constantly varied, functional movements, performed at a high intensity”. Being “generally physically prepared” (GPP) for anything. Doing the unexpected, expectedly well. CrossFitters are generalist, not specialist such as powerlifters, cyclist, or a football player. CF’ers train to be well-rounded at everything. This is everything that they tell you if you ever go get your L-1 cert. So, does this mean there should be no direction in your training? Since you’re a CF’er should you train on whatever lift or body movement you want? My opinion, absolutely not. You always need direction in your training. Just because you are a CF’er/generalist doesn’t mean take “constantly varied” to heart and do whatever the hell you want. Training as a CF’er, you have three categories: weightlifting, gymnastics, and metabolic conditioning. They are all three totally different categories that you are trying to be as best you possibly can be at. You have to work on all three categories every week. If you feel that your programming is random and has no direction, then it more than likely it is random with no direction. Training with the mindset, “I just work to failure”, or “I just lift heavy”, has no direction and you have no idea where you will end up. Always plan ahead, know the reason behind what you are doing, and make a weakness become a strength! -Josh
