● WHAT REALLY HAPPENS BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE FOOTBALL TRANSFER MARKET.(FOCUS ON WINDOW TRANSFER WINDOW) Generally, football league systems has two transfer windows. The major SUMMER transfer window, which starts from the 1st of July to 31st August and the minor WINTER transfer window which also starts from the 1st of January to 2nd February. Each transfer window has it own peculiar characteristics as far as the needs of actors(clubs, players and agents) are concerned. The summer transfer window is widely accepted as the perfect time for purchases whiles coaches like Arsene Wenger and pundits have their reservations about the winter transfer window. The winter transfer window is a volatile and a perfect time for clubs, players, agents and fans alike.Although everyone likes to track every move in the market, the gospel truth is that much of the process is shrouded in confusion. No club wants to lose its best players in the winter transfer window without time to replace them.So clubs looking to strengthen their ranks in this time of window mostly ends up paying premium.(The transfer of Andy Caroll to Liverpool and transfer of Fernando Torres to Chelsea). In the same vane, the window also present very good exploitable opportunities.Especially, leagues that run their season within the major leagues (EPL, LA LIGA, BUNDESLIGA, SERIE A, LIGUE 1) might have players available for a move(Nemanja Vidic left the Russian Super league during its close season to join Manchester United in January 2006). (Clint Dempsey crossed over from MLS close season to Fulham in January 2007). Under - appreciated players can also be found during the winter transfer window, as clubs try to shed wages of players who are not getting enough minutes on the pitch.(Daniel Sturridge move from Chelsea to Liverpool in 2013). Fast foward to what really happens in the transfer market.Usually, transfers involving big clubs with large scouting networks takes at least a full season.Very few transfers happens without the player being scouted enough.According to Sport Business magazine, Tottenham spent close to a season monitoring Dimitar Berbatov before eventually signing him. If a club is interested in signing a player, after sufficient scouting is done. The purchasing or buying club needs to find out whether the transfer is possible. At the onset, the buying club is not supposed to speak to the player or his representatives (agent) as it goes against transfer laws. What normally happens is that, the buying club engages a trusted intermediary (agent) to find out from the player whether he is interested in the move and the terms being offered. Whiles at the same time approach the selling club to get a sense of the players transfer value. Getting a transfer done involves crucial steps and buying clubs are very strategic in their efforts, because they dont want to be turned down by bidding for a player who is not interested in joining them (Alexis Sanchez to Liverpool in summer 2014). Clandestinely, the selling club also employ another agent or middlemen to secretly tout their players around, hence the never unending rumour mill about players. The reason clubs engage in this is all down to discretion, credible denialbility and maintain a sort of appreciable value of the player in potential suitors. So, once the player is interested in moving and an official bid is received by his employers being the selling club, who are also interested in the deal.Official negotiations begins.According to David Burke, head of operations at Brighton & Hove Albion, there are basically 3 negotiations in every transfer.Which are : 1) Buying club and the players agent about what the player wants for himself 2) Buying club and the players agent about their remuneration fee or commission. 3) The 2 clubs (buying and selling clubs) about what the selling party wants in terms of the price, popularly known as the transfer fee. Any inconclusive agreement within in any part of these process might collapse the deal. ●Item No.1 was the more reason why Gareth Bale turned down Manchester United to join Tottenham Hotspurs in the summer of 2007.Because he realised he wont have enough playing time. ●Item No.2 was the more reason why Eden Hazards move to Manchester United collapsed in summer 2012, because his agent, John Bico was demanding £6 million in commission ●Item No.3 was the more reason why Patrice Evra move to AC Milan collapsed in the winter of 2006. Though very few transfers collapse once negotiations kicks in because, there is usually enough concensus during the process. Most of the if any time transfer deals falls through, its largely due to money.its easier one party is asking for more money or the other party wants to pay less. Once a deal is agreed, the player goes through the final part:which Is a comprehensive medical assessment. Its a special analysis of the players health to make sure there are no issues.Worringly for the purchasing or buying club, its one part of the process they have no control over but rather the doctors.Any slightest issue with the players health could collapse the deal (Aly Cissokhos deal from Porto to AC Milan in the summer of 2009 due to teeth and gum issues that could cause spinal problems. So after the players health is comprehensively assessed, an an announcement is made and the player is official unveiled.
