WHAT SAY YOU? From Curtis Buckanaga: `Historical trauma. The word historical misrepresents our current state of trauma caused by being brutalized and dehumanized by industrialization, capitalism and imperialism. From Reyna Crow: `Crucially important points, imho. Id like to add to that by pointing out that the current diagnostic construct of ptsd does not fit the case of a person who is being traumatized, on a chronic basis, or who was never safe to begin with. Safety for people who face racism and/or other significant factors of `marginalization is a matter of degrees in many cases. The concept of traumatic stressors as circumscribed events that (but for war*) are soon over also contributes to tending to disbelieve as well as misdiagnose those whose lives are in fact unsafe or otherwise traumatic on a long term and/or recurrent basis. * It seems that though the current ptsd construct does consider combat situations and even P.O.W.s who clearly endure long term, severe trauma and often worse- so it fits in that regard, it does also presume that the label is affixed `post traumatic stressors, and that the person is technically safe but continues to experience symptoms. It seems to me that a diagnostic construct (or better, access to healing outside of this ridiculous paradigm) is urgently and critically needed for those who are traumatized, period. Currently traumatized. They need some damn help. The DSMV doesnt allow for this experience it seems.
