WHAT SHOULD A CHRISTIAN DO IF HE OR SHE IS ENGAGED TO AN UNBELIEVER? PART – 3 If ENGAGED to an Unsaved Person Sometimes brothers or sisters have already been ENGAGED to an unbeliever. What, then, should they do? It is clear that the Lord does not want us to marry unbelievers. But if a person is already engaged, it is a different matter. It is good if the unbeliever breaks the engagement for they are only engaged, not yet married. Should the Lord open the way so that the unbeliever offers to break the engagement because of the believers faith, it is well. You, as well as the opposite party, may suggest an annulment. Such a suggestion does not need to be initiated only by the other party, you may also initiate the suggestion as this is only an engagement. On the other hand also remember that a Christian should not annul such a contract CARELESSLY, for a contract is sacred in the sight of God. When the word of a Christian is already given, it must be enacted; it must not be destroyed. Because God keeps His word, we have salvation; otherwise, there would be no salvation. There are some Christians who even break the engagement contract with Christians which is wrong. Some even love their partner & show that they were willing to get married, but later drop out. Don’t move from friendship to love when marriage is not intended & do not break one another’s heart. That is why I have written the above statement so that when vows are taken, or when a word is given they should not be so easily broken. What if the unbelieving partner does not want to annul the engagement? Then the believer must speak to the unbelieving partner about our Savior, Jesus Christ & lead the unbelieving partner to become born again. Then the believing partner can take the unbelieving partner to the local church & get the partner prayed by your pastor & the pastor may counsel the unbelieving partner. If there is time, he/she could be water baptized & even Spirit baptized. There should be no hiding or pretension. The flag must be fully unfurled. As a Christian, he or she must be given freedom to serve the Lord with no interference & even the children must be nurtured in the admonition of the Lord. These things need to be settled before marriage, or else there will be difficulties. If the opposite party consents to our conditions, it is fine. If not engagement could be abrogated.
