WHAT TO DO ON THE DAY OF ASHURA The Day of Ashura is the 10th of Al – Muharram (i.e. the first month in the Islamic calendar), the merciful prophet prescribed for his followers what to do on that day. He encourages his followers to fast in the month of Al – Muharram as much as possible, the Hadith of Abu – Hurairah(R) which is reported by Imam Muslim, goes to show that the fasting in Al – Muharram is very encouraged, the prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “the more rewardable fasting after the month of Ramadan is (fasting) in the month of Al – Muharram and the more rewardarble prayer after the obligatory prayers is prayer (in middle) of the night”. (1) It is more encouraged on the 10th of Al – Muharram (Ashura), on the authority of Abu – Qatadah, the prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “fasting on the Day of Ashura” (i.e the 10th of Al – Muharram), I do hope Allah will (for it) forgive (the sins) of the preceded year”. (2) It is also advisable to fast a day before (i.e. the 9th of Al – Muharram), it was reported by Ibnul – Abbas that when the prophet (P.B.U.H) fast and ordained the fasting of Ashura”. They said: “O the messenger of Allah, this is one of the respected days for the Jews and Christians”. Then he said: ‘if I am opportune to witness next year I shall fast 9th”. He (i.e. Ibnul _ Abbas) said: “but he passed away before the next year”.(2) but what was reported that the prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “fast the day of Ashura, (but) go contrary with Jews, fast a day before and a day after”(3) is a very weak Hadith that cannot be relied upon as a proof. Fasting on the Day of Ashura, is also the position of the infallible Imams (as advocated by Shi’ah)(4) not what the contemporary Shi’ah is doing of marching in Husain(R) funeral procession or in the other places of their annual commemoration by slapping themselves in the face, ripping their clothes and striking themselves with swords and daggers. Al – Husain(R) said to his sister Zainab, at Karbala: “my sister, I swear by Allah, and I beg you in the name of Allah to preserve my oath, that: if I am killed you should not tear your gown for me, nor should you scratch your face with your finger nails, and do not wail and lament over my martyrdom”. (5) The above cited authority goes to show that what the contemporary Shi’ah were doing were concocted innovations as an infallible Imam (as they advocated) stopped his sister from doing that. If their grief truly reflects their great love for the Household of the prophet (P.B.U.H) why do they not grieve for the prophet’s uncle Hamza? He was killed in horrible circumstances, which were no easier than those of Husain at Karbala, Hamzah’s belly was cut open and his liver ripped out. So why do they not stage an annual commemoration of his death, slapping themselves in the face, ripping their clothes and striking themselves with swords and daggers? Is Hamzah not a member of the Household of the prophet (P.B.U.H) why do they not grieve also for the prophet (P.B.U.H) why do they not grieve also for the prophet (P.B.U.H)? Surely, our loose of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) was greater than any other.
