WHAT TO POST ON YOUR FACEBOOK WALLS - make sure who message is cut and paste with link: Hello Friends on Facebook - everyone one of you wherever you are: PLEASE READ THIS POST. I DESPERATELY NEED HELP. READING THIS IS STEP 1 (takes 2 mins). STEP 2 IS BELOW. As a lot of you may have seen from my somewhat depressing status updates, there have been some significant floods in Kashmir which have effected a huge number of people including a lot of my close family and friends, a lot of whom are still missing and uncontactable. As communication networks are slowing getting back, we are now starting to hear all the stories from people in the valley and the full scope of the disaster. The news is very disturbing. WHO CARES ABOUT KASHMIR? WHY WE CANT JUST LEAVE IT TO THE ORGANIZATIONS/GOVERNMENT? Right now the local Kashmiri authorities are largely absent in the region – they were completely unprepared and government officials were trapped inside their homes with no communication , waiting rescue themselves. The Indian army has been doing what it can, but it is completely overwhelmed. For context the major flooding happened about 3 days ago - to date approx. 45,000 people have been rescued but over 600,000 people are still waiting rescue with very limited facilities and resources on the ground to help achieve this. People have been without food and water on roofs waiting for help and even those rescued and placed in holding sites are now in need of basic survival amenities. Added to this catastrophe, is also the unfortunate political situation in Kashmir. The Indian government does not allow international organisations/charities (e.g. United Nations, Disaster Emergency Committee, Islamic Relief, etc.) access to Kashmir. So kashmiris cannot expect to receive any form of recognised international aid. More info on the challenges of what happens to aid in disputed territories can be read here: forbes/sites/mwani/2014/09/10/when-calamity-befalls-a-disputed-territory/ This means that Kashmiris across the world like myself have had to mobilise and co-ordinate relief efforts for our family and friends in the valley. A lot of people I know are currently booking flights to Kashmir to deliver their own aid as a result and we’re hearing all sorts of brave efforts are taking place on the ground to save people. HOW YOU CAN HELP MAKE MY DAY AND GENERALLY FEEL GREAT ABOUT YOURSELF - ITS NOT OFTEN YOU GET THE CHANCE TO SAVE PEOPLE SO QUICKLY AND DIRECTLY… IN-KIND ASSISTANCE – Individual and corporate The priority right now is getting essential supplies and medicine to the region. A list has been compiled (See below) and we are doing what we can to ensure it gets to the people directly. There are collection points across India (jkfloodrelief.org/?page_id=29) but we also have one in London now and hoping to get more internationally. The address for the UK is below. London Collection Point: Tasaduq Khwaja Mail Boxes Etc 49 High Street Barnet EN5 5UW 1) Please send anything you can individually and share this address with your networks. 2) If you work at a company that can help donate anything from the list below e.g. old clothes/ phones, medicine, FMCG products, packaged food, water sanitation etc, please let me know and share any contacts. I have already contacted a number of companies in India, but anything we can do this end internationally would be amazing. 3) If you have any contacts at aid or charity organizations (e.g red cross, etc) that can send us with supplies, advice or contacts please help. And if you want to help us, great! The more people we have helping us the better. FUNDING - Donations As mentioned the priority right now is supplies and this is what we want to focus on buying. However, appreciate it can be a bit of a hassle for people to send items, so we are also individually fund-raising. 1) One of my British Kashmiri friends – Muzammil Thakur –has set up a gofundme link for people wanting to donate in the UK. He has himself just flown out to Delhi today and will be there indefinitely working with other volunteers from JK Flood relief in India (jkfloodrelief.org/) to procure, collect and distribute all supplies to people in the valley. Please feel free to donate - gofundme/e7fmqg. We have raised £11,000 so far but this is a drop in the ocean for the task in hand. Please note it’s not a registered charity but it’s all we can do at the moment. We are wanting to work with local charities in Kashmir to set up international donations and Kashmir charities that are already registered here to allow for donations – the challenge is that unfortunately a lot of the people who run these organizations are stuck in the valley with limited communication. With telephone networks improving this will be hopefully be sorted soon. But in the mean time, we are relying on the gofundme site. 2) CHINAR Kashmir is a registered charity in Kashmir - this is now another option - chinarkashmir.org/donate International donors can wire contributions to the FCRA account below Child Nurture and Relief Kashmir State Bank of India Sanatnagar, Baghaat Barzulla Account No. 10464938115 Branch code. 001527 Swift code. SBININSB Donors within the country can deposit directly into any of our local accounts SB-9899 : J&K Bank ,Barzulla Srinagar SB-15743: J&K Bank, Balgarden Srinagar As we go along, well hopefully try to get more contacts in different countries too. Thank you for reading all of this. Really appreciate it. PLEASE SHARE AND HELP SPREAD THE WORD. @ FELLOW KASHMIRIS – COPY AND PASTE MY NOTE TO YOUR NETWORKS.
