WHAT WE ARE DOING IN FIJI YOU ASK? GOOD QUESTION, HERE YOU GO... The service portion of the adventure will take place on Malake Island which lies approximately 2.5km off the northeastern coast of mainland Viti Levu and falls under the administrative District of Rakiraki in the Province of Ra. Here we will work closely with Conservation International to serve a community of approximately 100 households. We will rely on buses and boats to arrive to our project site. The relaxation portion of our adventure will take place in a full-service luxury beach-front resort in port Dunuru on the mainland of Viti Levu. We will not be flying once we’ve arrived to Fiji to ensure the most relaxing journey for everyone. This year’s project represents a holistic approach to sustainable improvement and local development. We will be installing clean reliable solar power in the community, planting 5,000 trees on a hillside and visiting local schools to share our knowledge about importance of renewable energy. Moreover, our partnership with CI is enabling them to respond to a request from this local fishing community for support launching a reforestation effort that will help restore forest cover and conserve key water catchment areas. CI will also provide workshops and training on sustainable waste management and reforestation to help the community understand how to sustain themselves and protect their local environment and fishing livelihood. In short, we will be part of a three-pronged approach to improvement in the area: reforestation, education and reliable solar power. This is our largest project to date and it will be extremely gratifying to be a part of. There will be plenty for us to do as we work side-by-side with the local people and play a part in a significant long-term effort in this beautiful region of the world.
