WHATS HAPPENING IN YOUR COMMUNITY,, By, Mary Ann Wheeler · I asked Jake Morrison, Councillor for Wavetree to look into the Aldi site issue, he has inboxed me the reply he got from the council....Councillor, In response to your enquiry regarding the above premises and the issue of asbestos I can offer the following response: I manage the Environmental Protection Unit within the Council and one of my Officers has been dealing with this site with regards to potential contamination due to its former use. One of the possible contamination issues is related to the presence of asbestos. As such we placed a condition on the planning permission that was granted for the site. The condition requires the Developer and their consultants to undertake site investigations in a safe manner and submit a subsequent report to the Council for approval. We were notified several weeks ago that complaints had been made regarding dust from the site. As such we discussed with colleagues in Planning Enforcement, and as a result the Developer and their consultant agreed to voluntarily stop any further work on the site until the Council had been given the site investigation report (as already mentioned) so that we could review and understand better the level of risk associated with the development of the site due to its former uses. This would then ensure that any development moving forward would address any contamination issues in a safe and controlled manner such the there would be no health risk to either the workforce or members of the public. With specific regards to Asbestos, we know there is Asbestos on the site within the made ground, however we have not to date had the concentrations of asbestos quantified in enough detail and therefore the level of risk cannot be established, for that reason until the level of risk can be quantified work will not recommence until we are fully satisfied. There is a meeting between Council Officers, the Developer and their consultant next week to discuss this very matter. I trust the above response will be sufficient in answering your enquiry, if you require further information please contact me to discuss.
