WHEN DID JAMAICA LOSE ITS SPIRIT, EH? Former Prime Minister Michael Manley handed a rebuttal to US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger in 1976, refusing to support American opposition to the Cuban intervention at the United Nations. Today, when successive Ministers of Tourism (with entourage) greet tourists off an airplane, does the action not seem lame, compared to that Kissinger confrontation? Desperate, at least? Bob Markey joined the hands of political rivals Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP) at the Peace Concert in 1978. Other artistes such as Peter Tosh and Culture were ambassadors of social change. These days, we have STING, promoted by local entrepreneur Laing and his Caucasian-American silent partner Josef Bogdanovich. An event where gun shots are heard and artistes are called Bounty Killer, Ninja Man, Gully Pops (?). Onstage “clashes” are almost ridiculous but violent in threats. And when did some our Jamaican sister start “liberating” their bodies with outfits that might be more appropriately worn in brothels? And when did some of our hairstyle grow and change colour overnight (LOL). Even the spiritual Rastafarians have become casualties. Jamaican men engaged in the “Rent-A-Dread” industry have no concept of Rastafarian but have grown dreads because there is a niche market on the beaches. Are we needing more supermarkets because we are importing more than one billion dollars of food items per annum? Will the humble district shop and the market become extinct? Shake my head!
