WHEN I WAS DOING MY STUDENT TEACHING at Sullivan Central High - TopicsExpress

WHEN I WAS DOING MY STUDENT TEACHING at Sullivan Central High School back in the Spring of 1969, Mr. Carico was the senior class history teacher there with whom I taught two classes. He had intentionally designed into the last week of classes the archive films of the Holocaust of World War II. I sat in all the sessions each day (both classes) and watched for the first time, shocked as the seniors themselves were at the inhuman images on the screen. Even to this day those sobering images come back to haunt my mind as I watch the History Channel and reflect on how can human beings be so cruel to innocent people. Then a few weeks ago I watched the Oscar- winning movie based on a slave memoir, Twelve Years a Slave. I could hardly watch it. Jan couldnt. But it brought home to me once again how cruel and horrible we can be to people different from us and who we think we are better than. No wonder we dont like to be reminded of such evil and what the human spirit is capable of doing out of hate and bigotry.
