................WHEN IS THE ENDING THE BEGINNING?.............Hmmm, in Rescue, its at least once a week, hopefully more, rarely less. Our girl Susan has gone through a LOT of endings. There was the END of being out in the middle of nowhere when she was found by her rescuer, alone, feet infected by thorns, eaten up by flies and starving by an oil rig site. I went and picked her up, cleaned up her feet as best I could, put antiseptic on them and then had to take her to Animal Control because we didnt have room for her at that point, we were full. Schellie Ayers of Pointer Rescue.org saw her, and told us if we could just make room, their Rescue would pay to have her spayed and get her shots. So, Susans next End came - an end to puppy bearing days, an end to her time at Animal Control, and her beginning at WOOF. Schellie named her Susan. And Susan got healthy, just for us to find out that no, she wasnt REALLY healthy - she had Heart Worm disease. In a dog her age - 7 or 8, we estimate - we couldnt justify spending close to $1,000 for treatment that might or might not work. Thus began Susans journey to Sanctuary, to live out whatever time she had left in a Sanctuary Home. That became her next ending, where she tried to eat a smaller dog and back to WOOF she came, but THEN! Another BEGINNING! The wonderful man who was builiding our new shelter building, Don Swanson, liked the old girl, and he offered to pay for her Heart Worm treatment. Another End was in sight - the END to the Heart Worm disease. Treatment was successful, and she started her next BEGINNING - the beginning of REALLY being healthy! Don might have adopted her to join his hunting dogs, but Susan is afraid of loud noises, so guns were NOT in her future. So she stayed at WOOF and she waited for a home - and Another BEGINNING. Schellie and the Pointer Rescue came to her aid again. Today, Susan began her next ENDING - an End to her time at WOOF (and I cry as I type, not from sadness but because I am happy for her). Today, Susan left WOOF on an adventure to her new BEGINNING. She left with our friend, Lee Ann, for the first leg of a trip that will span 15 volunteers and hundreds of miles, moving Susan from Oklahoma to Ohio to her new Pointer Rescue Foster Home, where she will live out her time in the loving arms of a wonderful family until her Permanent Placement becomes available. So. for Susan, the End...or the Beginning...is in sight. The END of being homeless....the Beginning of a new home, with a family that will love her, and care for her and be with her until her days on this side of the Rainbow Bridge are at an End. It might be 5 years or more...Don gave her that time to live out her new BEGINNING. What an unselfish gift. What an amazing man. What a wonderful Beginning - or End, as the case may be. I cried as she drove away this morning. Happy tears. For a Happy Ending. And a Happy Beginning. Love you, Susan. Have a WONDERFUL LIFE. MERRY CHRISTMAS! ~Leila
