WHEN LIGHTNING STRIKES Several years ago, lightning struck the roof of a local church, causing a huge chunk of the ceiling in the sanctuary to come crashing down on a pulpit made of glass. They had a hole in the ceiling and a floor covered in wood chips and glass. We hear people warn not to stand close to a person saying something sacrilegious for fear of being hurt when the person is struck by lightning. Also, some people say theyre afraid to go to church for fear the roof will fall in. That church took quite a ribbing since both things happened to them. Fortunately no one was in the building at the time, but I doubt they had many visitors until the memory of what happened faded! We have a tendency to equate Gods feelings for us with what is happening in our lives. If things are going well, were convinced God loves us. On the other hand, if we have a long siege of nothing but disasters, were convinced we have done something terrible and God is angry and punishing us. No one has yet been able to answer the question of why bad things happen to good people, and I doubt anyone will this side of heaven. The prophet Habakkuk wasnt afraid to ask God hard questions, like Where are You?, How long?, and Why? I believe Gods answer to Habakkuk is the same answer He would give us today, which was basically that we wouldnt understand even if He told us. ...For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told (Habakkuk 1:5b).
