WHEN SHOULD THE ELDERLY STOP DRIVING? Stunning video: elderly driver sped through a Sacramento car wash last Friday, just missing employees, breaking equipment and slamming into a building. He mistook the gas pedal for the brake. How many times have we heard that? This raises so many questions, many of the same issues I faced. Understandably, elderly drivers are reluctant to give up that key to independence. None of us likes facing how are bodies and minds may be changing as we age. Poor driving was one of the early clues that something was wrong with my father. He kept coming home with scrapes and dents in his car that he couldnt explain. Months later, he was diagnosed with Alzheimers Disease. The challenge for all of us is to find a way to handle these situations gently and with love, but protecting our family members and others. What do you think? Is there a standard age when we should stop driving?
