WHEN THE LEAGUES MERGED . . . and it was evident that the AFL owners threw in the towel about keeping the name of the genesis of modern Professional Football, the American Football League, I wrote to Lamar Hunt and asked that at least they could have all former AL teams wear a patch indicating that they were originally in the AFL. Hunt responded that he thought doing so would make the uniforms too busy. Today EVERY team has an NFL patch at the base of the neckline, and numerous other teams have patches: the Giants with a 90th patch, the Panthers with a 20th, the Bills with an RCW, etc., etc. and Hunts own Chiefs with (lo and behold) an AFL patch! Below, Ill post patches that each former AFL team could wear today. Wouldnt this give a little life to the AFC/NFC rivalry? The first is an actual patch, worn by the Chiefs in perpetuum.
