WHEN THE PRESENTATION OR CONVERSATION STARTS A RIPPLE… When you throw a pebble into a pond, it creates a ripple. The other morning I had a chance to speak with a group of K-8 educators about my journey that led to The Art of Being Unmistakable. What I didn’t realize until the end of the day was that I wasn’t there to tell them my story or to talk about my book. I was there to throw a pebble into the pond and start a conversation that created a ripple: “Can we teach our kids that’s ok to fail and can we get their parents to buy into the fact that it’s ok for their kids to fail.” The second being the greater of the two challenges. In a system where we’ve rewarded conformity with high test scores, and meaningless metrics that go on made up “permanent records, John Nittolo and his staff are shifting paradigms and challenging the status quo. And they’re doing it in spite of the necessary evils that all educators are forced to deal with. In many ways they’re throwing a pebble into the pond to start a ripple that will go beyond the borders and boundaries of their single-school New Jersey District. They’re starting a ripple that could be a model for the future of education. We shouldn’t just pay attention. We should throw a pebble into the pond by spreading the word because what they’re doing matters.
