WHERE I AM FROM.... I am from a soft bedtime blanket and stuffed animals, from Barbies, Big Wheels, and a Red Flyer wagon. From a tall backyard oak tree, rickety homemade tree fort, and smell of fresh-cut grass. I am from the gardenias, the intoxicating floral smell coming from the flowers in a bowl of water. From Sunday afternoon outings to the beach, digging for sand fleas, fishing, and the treat of chicken nuggets for dinner. I am from a deep, strong, stern voice, and soft, comforting, ‘you’ll be just fine’ hugs. From ”But I didn’t do it!”, to “Don’t come back inside until dinnertime” and lots of “Have sweet dreams”. I am from weekly Sunday Services, to Wednesday youth group, grace before dinner, and nightly prayers before bed. I am from family get togethers of overflowing, hearty dishes of Sicilian foods, homemade breads, and delicious desserts. From Grandfathers who both put in their time for the red, white, & blue. From Grandmothers who spoiled the grandkids, reminding us “Your mother would have my behind if she finds out!” From a man who has always worked two jobs to ensure food on the table, shoes on my feet, and a roof over my head. From a woman who never slept in order to care for 6 young children, cooking, fixing boo-boos, untangling Rapunzel long hair, and beautiful, expensive Easter dresses and shoes... I am from photo albums, VHS home videos, and family traditions. From tears, laughs, grief, and happiness. I come not from wealth, but always rich in love.
