WHITEHALL- MONTAGUE HISTORY.Research by Evelyn Buckingham In order to understand properly the municipal history of Whitehall and Montague, it is necessary to understand the history of Oceana Township which included until 1874 both Montague and Whitehall townships and the northern portion of Blue Lake. Oceana was organized from White River Township in 1859. There were about 35 voters present and the following is a list of the first officers: Supervisor, I.E. Carleton; clerk, Moody Farman; Treasurer, Andreas Knudsen; Justices of the Peace, Lewis Grow, Thomas Sedden, and Jas. B Jewell; Highway commissioners, Jas. Jewell, Peter Hobler; School Inspector, I.E. Carleton; Overseers of the Poor, John Killson and Evan Knudsen, constable, Thomas Sedden, Jr., and Daniel Basom. Whitehall Township was formed March 24, 1874. Other firsts include: The first sawmill owned by C. Mears in 1838, and the first steam mill built by captain Dalton in 1867. The first general store owned by c. Mears in 1859, the first hardware store owned by Thompson and Pemberton in 1867 and sold in 1869 to P. Morse & Son. The first drug store owned by Zerah Mizner located in William Weston’s old barn in the fall of 1865. The first bank started by f. Blackmarr in 1869. The first blacksmith and wagon shop started by Thompson & Covel in 1863 who first hired M. M. Robinson to manage the business and later sold to him. The first hotel was started by Peter Hobler in 1862 called the Union Hotel and this burned January 1, 1870. The first printing office, the Forum, was started by Ben Frank, October 28, 1869. The first lawyer was Duane Thompson beginning in 1865. The first doctor was J. A. wheeler in 1865 followed by Dr. Mizer the same year and Dr. Squires, Dr. W. LaMontage and Dr. J. McKinnon in 1866. The first saloon was owned by William M. Simons in 1865. The first fire department was organized in May 1864, with H. E. Staples as perpetual chief. The first bridge across to Montague was built by W. H. Parks in 1864.
