WHO WAS OBAFEMI AWOLOWO? - early in life, Nigeria Chief Obafemi Awolowo who journened home at age 78 a peasant son, worked as a clerk, trader, newspaper reporter. He organized trade unions and 1947, wrote a significant pamphlet, PART TO NIGERIA FREEDOM. - After founding the Action Group and becomeing its first President, Awolowo took on the role of western region premier in 1954. - In this capacity he strive to improve education, social services and Ariculture. Practices. Adopting more social views after Nigeria gained independence in 1960, he later led the Unity Party of Nigeria. - Chief Awolowo, so respected Nigerias constitution he tried to overthrow those he felt had violated it. Accepting a 1963 prison setence, he said I am confident that the ideals of social justice and individual liberty which I hold hold dear will continue to be projected beyound the prison walls and bars untill they are realise in our life time HE QUOTE; ...for some time to come, the present twilight of democracy, individual freedom and the rule of law will change or mihgt change into utter darkness. But after darkness... and this is a common place... Come a glorious dawn.
