WHO WROTE THE BHAGAVAD GITA?- THE ESSENCE OF BHAGAVAD GITA AND RAMAYANA - SHIVAYA VISHNU ROOPAYA SHIVA ROOPAYA VISHNAVE LORD SHIVA IS THE GREATEST OF GURU Om Namah Bhagavate Vasudevaya Om Namah Shivaya The divine discourse of Srimad Bhagavad Gita is known to have been recited by Lord Sri Krishna to Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra at 3137 BC which apparently Sanjaya by his gifted powers heard and narrated to Dhritarashtra. Maharishi Ved Vyasa later recounted the epic of Mahabharata to Lord Ganesha who wrote it. The Bhagavad Gita was not written separately but was only a chapter in Mahabharata. Since Maharishi Ved Vyas recounted the epic of Mahabharata in which Bhagavad Gita was a chapter, thus the Gita appeared as a poetic discourse as a chapter in the Epic Mahabharata. Originally the Gita literally meaning song was written in a poetic form whose meter was a 32 syllable verse “Anusthup Chandha” similar to Vishnu Sahasranam again written by Shri Vedvyasa. It formed a part of the epic Mahabharata and did not contain chapters. It has been said that Adi Shankaracharya extracted the Gita from the Mahabharata epic and translated 700 poetic verses into a Sanskrit prose form with 18 Chapters as we see it today with each Chapter describing a particular Yoga. The original number of verses were probably 745. It is the first commentary on Bhagavad Gita. Thereafter there have been a number of translations into many different languages. Thus Adi shankaracharya (considered to be an incarnation of Lord Shiva) first brought out the essence of Bhagavad Gita as a text separate from Mahabharata. Also it may be noted that originally Gita was written by Lord Ganesha (Son of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati) It is again interesting to note that whereas Valmiki Ramayan describes the human aspect of Lord Rama, Tulsidas Ramayan emphasizes on the divine aspect of Lord Rama- Adhyatma Ramayan. Again it is believed that Lord Hanumanji (an incarnation of Lord Shiva) who gave regular darshan to Tulisidasji narrated the Ramcharitmanas to him. Jai gurudev! Hare Krishna!
