WHOA! WHOA! WHOA! Im watching the Common Councils Finance & Personnel Committee meeting and reading the 2014 City Budget Amendment Package and theres an amendment to significantly reduce the amount of the special purpose account created and allocated to the City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission for community outreach/mediation. Weve come so far over the last 2 years, and have made great impact becoming more visible and more relevant. We have now a FULL 7 member board, have initiated a progressive Transitional Work Partnership Program for returning ex-offenders now in its 2nd year, and are completing our strategic action and engagement plan for 2014 for which we are targeting those special purpose account funds for. I hope the amendment doesnt go through. 75% of ERCs SPA to promote and support equal rights initiatives designed to inform and educate Milwaukee residents about programs and services available to them from City Depts and other providers would be diverted to support the Citys Neighborhood Ambassadors Program, a City DCD administered program and component of the Milwaukee Jobs to support City BIDs (Business Improvement Districts) hire individuals directly to perform litter, graffiti, snow removal and other clean-up services in commercial corridors throughout the city. I understand the need to provide work opportunities for Milwaukee residents, and suppor the Citys effort to increase such opportunitis. However, the work of educating and supporting residents in accessing resources and providing critical leadership and coordination for working together to identify and address the systemic issues that maintain our Citys longstanding problem of discrimination, segregation, and strained City-resident group relations is, at least in my opinion, an equally important work the need be resourced and sustained at an appropriate level for impact. Had I not decided to read through the amendment package, I would have certainly missed this one.
