WHY I DECIDED TO RUN FOR SEASIDE HEIGHTS COUNCIL.. I have gotten a huge showing of support since I announced my decision to run for Seaside Heights Council in November 2014. I thank all of you who have liked my comments, emailed me privately, and those voters who I registered and/or spoke to about my campaign. I initially planned to wait my turn, as I was told to do by a small faction of Seaside Heights people who think they control everything and everyone. I made no bones about it that I intended to run for council within the next few upcoming years, and this created an enormous amount of jealousy in this camp, namely the Seaside Heights Republican Club, of which I had been a member since day one and a staunch supporter of the cause since its creation in 1991. I have come to the conclusion that certain members of the club are VERY resistant to any sort of change because it might infringe on whatever power they continue to grasp at like straws. During the 2013 campaign for the Republican Club, of which I did almost completely by myself, I heard the same thing over and over again: citizens are unhappy with the powers that be, do not like the current status quo, and are fed up with the scandal after scandal that has appeared in the local press numerous times, especially in this last year since the hurricane. Inasmuch, since I am a doer, I promised constituents again that I intended to run for office sooner versus later, and would work toward change. The bottom line is that Im unhappy to. Ive lived in Seaside Heights all of my 42 years, and my question is, what happened? to the Seaside Heights of my youth. This used to be such a wonderful place to live and work, and nowadays its a depressed area! Not only are things different than 30-40 years ago, they different than even 10 or 5 years past. I think that much of the reason for the current unpleasantness has to be blamed on old ways of thinking and complacency on the governing body. An entire key demographic, specifically that of those aged 18-50 is NOT REPRESENTED. This complete lack of younger persons with new and fresh ideas has let to a stagnation. One example of this is the lack of any services for the children of the town. Years ago, there was a recreation program and all sorts of things done to keep the local kids away from trouble. Today there is absolutely nothing. It is no secret that this is because the powers that be dont want anything like that. If it were up to some people, they would close the local elementary school, something Ive heard many times during my 11 years on the Seaside Heights Board of Education. The sad truth is that the many families with children and renters in general are considered riff-raff by some, and they would prefer to see them gone versus trying to create a community for everyone in spite of age, race, socioeconomic and other factors. The 18-50 demographic has no idea the power that is right in their fingertips by VOTING. My intention is to create an inclusive voting block with representation from EVERYONE living in Seaside Heights, not just the elite. So this is why I am making it my daily business to register voters and create an independent campaign for myself. I am a natural born leader and politician. This is wHere the falling out with the establishment lies. Im a well-known person in Seaside Heights for many reasons, and people know that Im a go-getter. I dont wait around to be told what I should do, who I should be friends with, to only register the right people, and so on. Anyone that has ever tried to control me has been in for a rude awakening because I dont play that way. Again, I was told to wait my turn, and thats what Im doing because MY TURN IS NOW! So, I ask the fair and intelligent voters of Seaside Heights to band together with me in 2014 and promote PETER JAMES SMITH for Seaside Heights Council. Remember, A VOTE FOR PETE IS A VOTE FOR PROGRESS, and I avow to be a SEASIDE HEIGHTS ELECTED OFFICIAL WORKING FOR EVERYONE!
