WHY NEW SOFTWARE SUBSCRIPTION MODEL IS STINKY We used to buy software and keep it. Now, the new method for many software giants is to rent the software to you instead. For example, Adobe. With Adobe, there is now no option to buy the latest software outright; you have to rent it month by month, year by year. And when you stop renting, you lose the software. Meaning you lose your work, and the ability to do anything with the work that you created in Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc. You could be a renter for a decade or decades, paying many thousands to Adobe; many times the cost of buying the software outright. Then, you decide you can’t continue with the subscription. Then, you lose everything. I don’t like this model. It ties us to software companies for life. It means you own nothing, and as soon as you stop handing over the money, you end up with nothing. Seems like a form of blackmail to me. At least with mobile phone contracts you get to keep the phone at the end of the contract. scientificamerican/article/adobe-software-subscription-model-means-you-cant-own-your-software/
