WHY NORTH-EAST SECURITY IS DETERIORATING – RIBADU Category: News Published on Wednesday, 12 March 2014 05:00 Written by Ismail Mudashir & Abdulkadir Badsha Mukhtar, Kano Hits: 34 Presidential candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, yesterday said security in the North-east of the country is deteriorating because the people addressing it are not connected to what is happening there. Speaking at the conference of northern elders and leaders in Kano, he said both the government and the security chiefs in the country are too far from what is happening in the area. “If the vice president had been visiting there he would have known what is happening there, if the senate president had been going there he would have known too or if the speaker had been there he would have known too but no single person at the highest level of the country is connected to what is happening there,” he said. While highlighting the failure of leadership, unity and strategic planning as some of the issues responsible for the failure of the North, he said the challenges were reflections of the dire condition of Nigeria as a country. “It is part of a global phenomenon afflicting countries with majority Muslim populations such as Afghanistan, Somalia and Pakistan. It is the ability of the constituted authorities to manage it and successfully contain it that differentiates ours from what happens elsewhere,” he said. The former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said northerners must first put their house in order before pointing accusing fingers at someone else for trespass. The solution to the problem bedevilling the region, he said, is competent and responsible leadership that will unite the people and not one that would polarise the people along ethnic and religious lines. Ribadu while advocating for abolition of the Almajiri system in the North, called for free education in the region, saying, “Education must be made free and compulsory to a reasonable level. The curriculum of schools in the region should be reviewed to reflect modern realities”.
