WHY VOTE FOR ME, SHELL MERCER, FOR FAMILY COURT JUDGE, DEPT. C? Ive been a practicing attorney for 15 years; before that, in 1992, I was a legal secretary and paralegal. In 2009, the Family Court Judges chose me to serve as a Pro Tem Hearing Master. Ive sat on the bench and adjudicated approximately 3,000 matters in the following areas of Family Court: Juvenile Delinquency, Abuse & Neglect, Mental Health Commitment, Discovery, Guardianship, Domestic Violence, Child Support & Truancy. Ive also served as a Truancy Judge for a few years. In 2010, the Governor of Nevada appointed [and subsequently reappointed] me to serve as 1 of 2 consumer members on the Chiropractic Physicians Board of Nevada. Ive chaired a number of disciplinary hearings as a member of the Nevada chiropractors licensing and regulatory board. I grew up with two older siblings. Our father was enlisted in the Air Force. He passed away from multiple sclerosis when I was a senior in high school. Ive lived in Las Vegas since 1988 (with the exception of the time I spent in law school in San Antonio, Texas). Ive been married 17 years to a LVMPD veteran of 23 years. We have two amazing teenagers who are involved in band, NJROTC, Civil Air Patrol, church, football, theatre, Gymkhana rodeos, and raising pigs as members of 4-H. Am I qualified to be a Family Court Judge? If you were to define qualified as an attorney who has only practiced family law for 25-30 years, you might be tempted to vote for one of my opponents -- but I believe knowing the law is just a small component of a learned judge. In addition to the judges motivation for seeking the bench, a judges integrity, character, experiences, and accomplishments are at least as important as knowing the law. I will be the more effective judge because of my diverse background, professional reputation and out-going personality. In addition to working during undergraduate school at the University of Texas, to obtain my Bachelor of Science degree in Radio, Television and Film, and going to law school to get my Juris Doctor degree, Ive gone to electronics school, modeling school, real estate school and Ive taken some classes in graduate school in the education department. Ive studied music, Spanish and French. As an Air Force brat, Ive lived all over the United States and Puerto Rico. Ive traveled to Europe, South America, Mexico, Canada and the USA. I had a prior career in television. Ive worked in fast food, waited tables, and I was a casino cocktail server. I even worked as an under-reporter at the IRS during college. My various other life experiences have led me to discover my true passion, serving the public. Moreover, this vast, life-experience will help me understand and relate to the families I will serve. I am firm, but fair. I have high integrity; I do the right thing. I am the same person when no one is looking as I am when everyone is looking. I am insightful, considerate, kind, respectful, approachable, sensitive, honest and hard-working. I have an inherent sense of justice as well as a good sense of humor and solid boundaries. My strengths lie in leadership, teaching and compassion. I am a great listener. I have a teachable spirit. I communicate well and I maintain a positive disposition and demeanor. It is difficult for me to describe my qualities because I am not boastful. I am not critical, self-serving, angry or mean-spirited. Finally, I am keenly aware that as a Family Court Judge, I am the public servant--not the other way around! Thus, I am asking YOU to be my employer and give me the job of being your elected Family Court Judge. I will not disappoint you!
