WHY WE REINTRODUCE BOARDING PRIMARY SCHOOLS - Kwankwaso Kano state government has re-introduced boarding primary education as part of moves to revitalize education from the grassroots. The state governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso stated this while symbolically declaring open Shehu Minjibir Primary Boarding School, flagging-off of training of teachers at National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and launch of e-learning programme for students of Governor’s College, Kano. The governor said his administration decided to reintroduce boarding primary schools, which were disbanded in the state over 40 years ago, because they not only provide dynamic learning atmosphere but also offer ample opportunity for the students to study, engage in extramural activities and build strong social interactions. Governor Kwankwaso disclosed that the school was constructed by government at the cost of N300 million, adding that 140 students have been enrolled as its first batch of students. He revealed further disclosed that two additional such schools would be opened at Rano and Dambatta with a view to having a public boarding primary school in each of the three senatorial districts in the state. He explained that the government agreed to name the boarding school after veteran teacher Alhaji Shehu Minjibir, MON, in view of his contributions to the development of education in the state, noting that two illustrious teachers in the state would also be immortalized, as the remaining two schools would to be established would be named after them. On the Mass teachers in-service Degree Program, the governor said over 300 teachers would be supported to pursue degree and postgraduate programmes at NOUN, adding that more teachers would benefit from the scheme subsequently. Turning to the e-learning centre at Governor’s College, he stated that N65 million was spent in making the project a reality, pointing out that government intends to expand the programme to cover mega colleges and science secondary schools in the state. Responding, Alhaji Shehu Minjibir, MON, who described the event as memorable thanked the state government for finding him worthy of the honour. He donated 5000 copies of exercise books to the school. One of the pupils of the new school, Ado Ahmad acknoledged that they are enjoying learning at the school because of the facilities put in place adding that feeding, electricity and water supply in it are standard.
