WI Senate Bill 278 Just returned from 5 hours of the only public Senate hearing on SB 278 which would allow the G-Tac iron mine to close 3,500 acres from it’s Managed Forest Land obligations without paying back taxes or fees. The bill serves only this corporation and it’s water is being carried by Sens Tiffany and Grothman. The very few testifying in favor were paid by the corporation or brought in from out-of-state (Idaho) to testify to the need for protection from “eco-terrorists”; pot calling kettle black. A score of citizens testified against. I told the tale of my eco-terrorist ancestor from Marinette who, through an economic-development jobs bill, got the right to harvest timber from one-mile on either side of the railroad he was building. Instead he stripped ten miles, telling my grandfather, “By the time they catch me, I’ll be too rich to stop”. His name was Isaac Stephenson and he was later elected US Senator (R) from Wisconsin. Senator Tiffany asked me if I was angry at my relative. I said not really since like King George he was long dead before I lived.
