WIB-Seattle] Urgent Request and Invitation from WHEEL Women in Black [1 Attachment] [email protected] [WIB-Seattle] To wib-seattle@yahoogroups Today at 9:42 AM [Attachment(s) from [email protected] included below] Dear Friends of WHEEL/Mary’s Place Women in Black: Our Seattle homeless community is close to the breaking point. Last Wednesday, in the pouring rain, we stood vigil (see attached photo) for seven homeless men who recently died outside or by violence in King County, two by suicide. Without shelter, people lose hope, and too often they die on our streets. That Wednesday morning, we’d learned that the loving, low-barrier WHEEL Winter Women’s Shelter, for 50-60 women a night, will be displaced from its current home—Sacred Heart Hall on Lower Queen Anne—for one night on 10/25 (this Saturday) and probably permanently in November. The WHEEL Winter Women’s Shelter doesn’t have another host option that wouldn’t displace ANOTHER that currently has no place to go. Then, on Friday, the City of Seattle posted SHARE/WHEEL’s Tent City3, which is currently encamped at Ravenna Blvd/8th NE NE, with a notice and order to remove effective THIS Wednesday, 10/23. Tent City3 doesn’t have a host offer, and in fact unsuccessfully reached out to more than 30 churches all over the City before being forced—in order to keep its word and honor its commitments—to move onto public land. Friends, this is a crisis point. Please reach out immediately to Mayor Murray (206.684-4000, [email protected]) and ask him to do two things: 1) Allow the WHEEL Winter Women’s Shelter to stay at the Seattle Center Northwest Rooms this Saturday, October 25th, and also during the months of November and December, until another host site for this critically-needed downtown, low-barrier women’s shelter is secured. 2) “Stay” the notice and order to remove Tent City3 from public land and allow them to stay there until their next host site—Seattle Pacific University—is ready for them in January. In addition, PLEASE help us put these survival needs forward by joining WHEEL and our Occupy CEHKC Coalition Partners (SAFE, TRU, SHARE and Nickelsville) at our Quarterly Demonstration in conjunction with the Governing Board Meeting of CEHKC. Our Occupy demonstration starts noon TOMORROW (Tuesday, 10/21) at Westlake Park (4th/Pine), and includes a super-important community RALLY at 5:30 PM, then a community meal and sleepout. Then, on Wednesday morning we’ll rally again at 7 AM, march together to the Governing Board Meeting at Seattle City Hall, where we’ll repeat our requests. PLEASE JOIN US AND SPREAD WORD WIDELY OF THESE CRISIS NEEDS AND COMMUNITY EVENTS!
