WIREGRASS This Facebook Group is defined by the Wiregrass Region of southern Georgia and Alabama as well as the counties in Northern Florida. The name WIREGRASS comes from a type of plant that you see growing wild and quite common in the longleaf pine forests and sand hills in the region. Wiregrass (Aristida stricta) is a very hardy and a fast growing species. This region was sparsely populated before the time of the Civil War. Our ancestors who were the pioneers for this region in the late 1700s and early 1800s were flooding in from South Carolina and North Carolina and were displacing the Native Americans who had inhabited this region for centuries. Some pictures of Wiregrass are included here.
