WISDOM FROM AL-QUR’AN AL-KARIM [Prefatory Note: This group of ayat of Surah al-Baqarah (ayat 17-20) completes the imagery of the description of the Munafiqun in this Chapter of the Glorious Qur’an. In the previous posts, we have presented ayat 8-10 and ayat 11-16 which give clear descriptions of the hypocrites. In ayat 17-20, Allah Almighty showed the effect of the choice of the Munafiqun of misguidance over guidance, of deviation over righteousness which results into not only blindness of the eyes but utter blindness of the heart. Insha Allah, in subsequent posts, we will read other Chapters of the Glorious Qur’an on this subject.] [17. Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it illuminated all around him, Allah removed their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see. 18. They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they return not (to the right path). 19. Or like a rainstorm in the sky, bringing darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers. 20. The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things. [Postscript: The imagery presented in the foregoing verses vividly shows the effect of choosing disbelief over faith, falsehood over guidance, deviation over righteousness. The hypocrites are likened to a person who kindles a fire but after experiencing the illumination, the fire is removed and he is left in utter darkness. This point to the fact that a hypocrite first believed and thereafter abandoned his faith, and so, like one illumined by the light of true understanding, he now becomes deaf, dumb and blind as he no longer understands the truth. Real blindness is blindness of the heart. Worst, the hypocrites, out of this doubt, disbelief and utter rejection of the truth that are created in their hearts, developed fear, anxiety, worry, and depression. Their fear of death is manifest in the fact that a mere sound of thunder would make them put their fingers on their ears for fear of death.] And Allah knows best.
