WOMENS MONTH IN SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 2014 Dear friends, It - TopicsExpress

WOMENS MONTH IN SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 2014 Dear friends, It is Womens Month in South Africa and tomorrow, on South Africas Womens Day, we will be celebrating women and remembering the women who marched against the Apartheid pass laws in 1956. We are also honouring the work, leadership, burdens and achievements of women today, and paying attention to the work that is still needed to end gender-based violence and achieve gender equality. Its a busy time for Sonke. Below are just a few of the highlights that we wanted to share with you: 1) Sonkes Government & Media Relations Manager, Mbuyiselo Botha, was a panellist in the Sowetan Dialogue this week on The Role of Women in Nation Building, 20 years into Democracy, alongside Sisi Mabe, Speaker of the Free State Provincial Legislature. The dialogue focused on the roles women play in nation-building and in a democratic South Africa, and asked whether patriarchy still has a role to play in a democratic society? 2) Sonkes Government & Media Relations Manager, Mbuyiselo Botha, will join the President of Chile, Michele Bachelet, and UCT Chancellor Graca Machel at a gender-in-dialogue event on August 10th coordinated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the University of Cape Town (UCT)’s African Gender Institute (AGI) around the topic Does Gender Still Matter in the Ongoing Work of Liberation?
