WORD ALIVE … Bringing the relevance of God’s Word to our everyday life. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EVERY PERSON CAN BE CREATIVE (Vol 1; No 72) It is a fact that some people do not believe that they are creative. Maybe because nobody has ever told them they are creative and inspires them to do something, they never tried to venture into anything worthwhile. They have imbibed in their subconscious that great things are not for them because they have concluded that they cannot make any headway even if they make any attempt. The result is that they end up crawling when they are supposed to be walking like giants. The truth is that every person is creative but a lot of people do not believe in their own creativity. The average messenger who sits in the store is potentially as creative as the chief executive who sits in the big office. The problem is that the messenger does not have confidence in his own abilities and brilliance and doesn’t, therefore, believe he can make it to the top as his boss. More often than not the level of creativity you exhibit depends on the people that influence you. Surround yourself with confidence-builders and not confidence-busters. There are three types of people that have influence on you and who may help you build your confidence or deflate it. They are the PEOPLE OF TODAY, the PEOPLE OF YESTERDAY and the PEOPLE OF TOMORROW. The PEOPLE OF YESTERDAY are the ones who always remind you of your ugly past and pitiable root. They always draw your attention to your poor beginnings and austerity past when you were nothing, had nothing and did nothing. In most cases they highlight only the negative side of your past in their assessment of you. These set of people use your past history to assess your present and future performance and by their negative assertions they programme you for failure. It is this kind of people that said disdainfully concerning Jesus, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose mother we know” (John 6:42 NIV). It was the same people that said, “But we know where this man is from … (John 7:27 NIV). They were too familiar with Jesus’ humble past; hence they were not so comfortable with the supernatural manifestations in His life that they treated Him with contempt and derision. Beware of this kind of people. They are usually retrogressive and backward in their assessment of you. It was Mike Murdock that said, “Stop looking at where you have been and start looking at where you can be.” There is no future in the past. Rehearsing the sad memories of the past is like watching the same movie over and over, wishing for a different ending. It’s not going to happen. The past is always going to be the way it was. Yesterday is history. Stop trying to change it. The more you look back the less you will get ahead. Your past cannot be changed but you can change your future by your decisions and actions today. Looking back strains your future. Avoid lengthy thinking on the past. Nothing is as far away as one hour ago. “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past,” said Thomas Jefferson. God never performs His greatest feats in your yesterdays. Your best days are not behind you. They are ahead of you. The PEOPLE OF TODAY are those who acknowledge what you have done in the past and at the present and conclude that you can’t do more than that. They maintain that you don’t have what it takes to go far. They advice you should not stretch yourself too much or too far. They assert that you are good but not good enough for what you are aspiring for. They tell you that you can’t improve on yourself, that you are okay as you are now, you have arrived, that you should forget about tomorrow. Such people do not give you room for improvement. They feel that you don’t have what it takes to go further than where you are now. They conclude that you have reached your apex in life and that you have nothing more to offer. These are the kind of people that place a limitation on you and hedge you in by their self-devised boundary. Watch out for this kind of people. They are usually myopic in their assessment of you. Make the most of your today but don’t lose sight of tomorrow. Today was once the future from which you expected so much in the past. So doing the best today puts you in the best place for tomorrow. Don’t waste today regretting yesterday, instead maximize today by making a memory for tomorrow. The PEOPLE OF TOMORROW are those who believe in you. They believe that you have a great future. They know that the future conditions you, not the past. They maintained that what you commit yourself to become determines what you are and what you shall be more than anything that ever happened to you yesterday. They believe that your best days are still ahead. They give you room for improvement. They acknowledge what you have done before and still maintain that you can do better. They help to bring out the best in you and ginger you to forge ahead even in the face of improbable conditions. They believe you can make it in life because you have what it takes to make it. They don’t set limits for you because they know that there is no limit to what you can achieve. These people are usually long-sighted about their assessment of you. Amongst these three types of people the ones you allow to influence your life will determine how far you will go in life.
